Rudraksha’s are often referred to as beads, but are actually seeds from Rudraksha trees. These trees grow in the wild and are found in the Himalayas of India and Nepal also Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The beads grow inside what looks like a blueberry and come in a variety of sizes ranging from 4mm to 16mm, the smallest being the rarest.
Rudraksha’ has its origin in the Sanskrit words, ‘Rudra’ and ‘Aksha’. ‘Rudra’ is another name for Lord Shiva, and ‘aksha’ means teardrop. The relation to Lord Shiva is from the Shiva Purana. He was once in deep meditation, with an aim to bring happiness to all living creatures. When he had finished his meditation tears fell on the earth, which became the Rudraksha seed.
Divine qualities of these beads were first noted in ancient Hindu scriptures and have been carried forward through the ages. These qualities are said to settle the mind, increase mental clarity, memory and general awareness, reduce stress and depression, free negative thoughts and calm the central nervous system. It is also known for its anti-aging effect and electromagnetic and inductive properties.
The beads contain carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen which have been found to scientifically contain electromagnetic properties, medicinally healing many mind and body ailments such as heart disease and lowering blood pressure. These malas are categorised based on the number of ‘Mukhis’ present on the seed. The number can range from 1 Mukhi to 21 Mukhis. As the number of Mukhis rises, so does the rarity, significance and powers. Each type of Mukhi Rudrakshra mala or seed carries its own unique set of benefits for the user.
